الثورة المصرية
Updated 12 month(s) ago
The Egyptian Revolution of 2011 (Arabic: الثورة المصرية سنة 2011‎ al-Thawrah al-Miṣriyyah sanat 2011) began in Egypt on 25 January 2011, with a series of street demonstrations, marches, rallies, acts of civil disobedience, riots, labour strikes, and violent clashes in Cairo, Alexandria, and throughout Egypt, following similar events in Tunisia and as part of a longer-term campaign of civil resistance. Millions of protesters from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds and religions demanded the overthrow of the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, along with an end to corruption and police repression, and democratic reforms of the political system. On 11 February, Mubarak resigned from office as a result of determined popular protest.

Chilean Miners
Updated 12 month(s) ago
The Copiapó Chilean mining accident occurred on 5 August 2010, when the San José copper-gold mine, near Copiapó, Chile, collapsed, leaving 33 men trapped deep below ground. The miners survived underground for a record 69 to 70 days. All 33 miners were rescued and brought to the surface on 13 October 2010, with the first miner emerging from the Fénix 2 rescue capsule at 00:10 CLDT on 13 October 2010 and the last miner emerging at 21:55 CLDT.

The San José Mine is about 45 kilometres (28 mi) north of Copiapó, in northern Chile. The miners were trapped at approximately 700 metres (2,300 ft) deep and about 5 kilometres (3 mi) from the mine entrance, following the twists and turns of the main entrance shaft. The mine had a history of instability that had led to previous accidents, including one death.

The retrieval of the first miner, Florencio Ávalos, commenced on Tuesday, 12 October 2010 at 23:55 CLDT, with the rescue capsule Fénix 2 reaching the surface 16 minutes later. By 21:55 CLDT on 13 October 2010, all 33 miners had been rescued, almost all in good medical condition, and expected to recover fully.

Toxic! Deepwater Horizon Oi...

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, Deepwater BP oil spill, and the Macondo blowout) is a massive ongoing oil spill and oil gusher in the Gulf of Mexico that started on April 20, 2010. The spill followed a blowout that caused an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig, which then sank off the coast of Louisiana. Eleven rig workers are missing and presumed dead; the explosion also injured 17 others. The oil spill covers a surface area of at least 2,500 square miles (6,500 km2) according to estimates reported on May 3, 2010 by Reuters. The oil spill, originating from a deepwater oil well 5,000 feet (1,500 m) below sea level, was estimated to be discharging 5–25 thousand barrels (210,000–1,100,000 US gallons; 790,000–4,000,000 litres) of crude oil daily (146–764 U.S. gallons or 550–2,890 L per minute). BP has limited access to outside researchers, thus this figure is disputed.

The spill is expected to eclipse the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill as the worst US oil disaster in history. Experts fear that due to factors such as petroleum toxicity, it will result in an environmental disaster as the oil from the well site reaches the Gulf coast, damaging the Gulf of Mexico fishing industry, tourism industry, and habitat of hundreds of bird species. Crews are working to block off bays and estuaries, using anchored barriers, floating booms, and sand-filled barricades along shorelines.

BP was principal developer of the Macondo Prospect oil field and leased the drilling rig from Transocean Ltd. The U.S. Government has named BP as the responsible party in the incident and will hold the company accountable for all cleanup costs resulting from the oil spill. BP has accepted responsibility for the oil spill and the cleanup costs but indicated that the accident was not their fault as the rig was run by Transocean personnel. One plan, in progress, is to lower a smaller containment box hat to funnel the leaking oil, through a pipe system, up to a ship on the surface (see diagram). Initial attempts to install a larger dome resulted in failure, due to the accumulation of clathrate hydrate crystals (methane clathrate). Other plans include having the robots wrap the leaking pipes in outer casings, and shooting objects into the main leak.

Thousands of strange animals that exist in eternal darkness deep in the oceans have been cataloged for the first time by scientists. The International Census of Marine Life has cataloged more than 17,500 and recorded 5,722 species living at depths greater than 1km.

Other deep sea pictures, such as those from National Geographic, are sourced accordingly.
