Hello friends,

One of the questions I’m asked about social networking is whether it really creates relationships the way that in-person networking creates relationships. It’s a good question to ask, and is often asked by people who want to determine if they really need to be on these different social networking sites, in order to do business. My answer is that social networking does allow you to create and sustain relationships in an online environment and that some of those relationships can even lead to business. However, just as a relationship in in-person networking needs mutual work from everyone to be successful, the same is true with relationships you cultivate on social networks.

I teach people how to automate their social networks as much as possible, because I think it’s important to know how to manage your networks effectively. But I also think it’s important to spend some time cultivating your online network. It can help you quite a bit in promoting your business and more importantly establishing relationships that can last a lifetime. That last part is more important because your business may change or go away, but the relationships you create and the networks you build can be there for you through all periods of your life, if you allow them to be.

Networking is a relationship building activity. What that means is that some kind of relationship needs to exist in order to make networking viable. People go to networking meetings on the premise that by getting to know each other, they can confidently refer business to each other. The idea is that people do business with the people they know. This principle also applies on online networks. We connect with people we know online, and we do so to either strengthen an existing relationship or to create a new one. So while we can automate our online networks, we also need to balance that automation with some focus on building relationships on those networks.

I don’t think that spending lots of time on online social networks is the answer, even as I don’t think spending all your time at in-person networking events is the answer. But I do think choosing to spend some time participating on the networking sites you find useful can really go a long way toward creating relationships that can help you build your business and also help you out in other situations. To discover what networks are really useful for you, spend time on those networks, even if it’s just devoting a few minutes to post a response or two in the forums. If you find that you get responses, spend some more time on the site. Keep building your presence, and thus your relationships.

As you get to know the people on those sites, don’t hesitate to tell them about what you do and what a good lead would be. They might be able to help you and help someone who needs your services. Remember that networking works because it’s not just people doing business with people they know, but people also doing business with people who are recommended to them by people they trust! Cultivating online relationships in your network can help you and help people that your network knows. Additionally, there may come a time when someone in your online network needs your help and you can help them.

I don’t spend a lot of time on the social networking sites. I spend perhaps two hours, maybe up to three on a given week, but I limit my time on them, because I have clients to take care of, articles to write, and other activities to do, to keep my business on track. But the small amount of time I do spend on those sites is focused on building stronger relationships or creating new ones. And in building those relationships, sometimes I’ve gotten some business, but throughout I’ve never lost sight of the main reason I’m on those sites. I want to help other people out. That’s why I do my business and that’s what motivates me to build a strong network, so that I can help other people and someday they can return the favor if I need help. And the truth is, you are only as strong as your network is, and that includes online networking too.

How committed is your company to your social efforts? Is your social initiative a small side project or the essence of what your company stands for? Incorporating a social mission is about creating a harmony between your company philosophy and passion for social change. There is a spectrum of commitment–some entrepreneurs combine their social and company mission, while others use their company philosophy to define their social mission.

Identifying which direction you’re going to take is important when deciding what social mission is right for your business. Whether it’s checking the box or incorporating a social mission into your business model or anything in between, there are several points to consider:

Identify the company mission

Before brainstorming your social mission, identify the essence of your company. What is your core mission? What is your company philosophy? What does your company value? What level of integration will a social mission have on your company mission or visa versa??

YOUR LIFE CREATE IT

1. Imagine that there is a solution to every problem, a way to overcome every limitation, and no limit on your achieving every goal you can set for yourself.
What would you do differently?
2. Practice “back from the future thinking.” Project forward five years and look back to the present.
What would have to happened for your world to be ideal?
3. Imagine your financial life was perfect in every way. How much would you be earning? How much would you be worth? What steps could you take starting today, to make these goals a reality?
4.Imagine your family and personal life was perfect. What would it look like? What should you start doing more of, or less of, starting today?
5. Plan your perfect calendar. Design your year from Jan.to Dec. as if you had no limitations. What would you change, starting today?
6.Imagine that your levels of health and fitness were perfect in every way. What could you do, starting today, to make your vision for yourself into a reality?
These are things you need to think about and be asking yourself every single day. You need to have a blue print of your goals and desires made up.

Heres todays lesson-

” Your problem is to bridge the gap between where you are now and the goals you intend to reach.” -Earl Nightingale-

Select the Beliefs you want-

Imagine that there was ” Belief Store”, very much like a computer software store, where you could purchase a belief to program into your subconscious mind.

If you could choose any set of beliefs at all, which belief would be the most helpful to you??? Here is my suggestion.

Select this belief:

” I am destined to be a big success in life.”
If you absolutely believe that you are destined to be a big success, you will walk, talk, and act as if everything that happens to you in life is part of a great plan to make you successful.

And as it happens, this is how the top people think in every field.

LIVE IN TRUTH WITH YOUR SELF

The practice of Integrity means that you live in truth with everyone around you. You state your truth honestly. You do not stay in relationships that are wrong for you or do things that you do not agree with or believe in.
You do not say things to people that are not honest and sincere expressions of your true beliefs. You insist on living in truth in every area of your life. The roots of self- esteem and self- confidence lie deep within your own character.

The more you practice impeccable integrity in your relationships with yourself and others, the more you will like and respect yourself. The more you like and respect yourself, the more you will like and respect others, and the more they will like and respect you. Both the quantity and quality of your relationships will increase.

Integrity is the one value that guarantees all the others. You are honest to the degree to which you live consistently with every other principle that you know to be right and good and true.Consistency in behavior is the measure of your integrity.

Be Prepared to REINVENT yourself

Be Prepare to Reinvent Yourself Take a hard look at your current company and industry and your current job situation.
Take a hard look at your market relative to your competitors. In reinventing yourself, stand back and think about starting your career over again today, knowing what you now know.
Imagine that your job and your industry disappeared over night.Imagine that you had to make brand new career choices.
If you were starting over again today, with your special combination of talents and skills, what would you choose to do that is different from what you are doing now?You are your most valuable assetyour most valuable financial asset is your earning ability, your ability to apply your talents and skills in the market place.
In reality, you could lose your home, your car, your bank account and your furniture and be left with nothing but the clothes on your back. But as long as your earning ability was intact, you could walk across the street and begin generating a good living almost immediately.Your earning ability is extremely precious to you, and your earning ability can be either appreciating asset or a depreciating asset.
your earning ability can grow in value if you continue to invest in and develop it. It can decline in value if you begin to take it for granted and start to coast on the basis of what you have done in the past.

ASSOCIATE YOUR SELF WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE

One of the most important decisions that you make in life is your choice of the people with whom you habitually associate.
Associate with the right people.Spend time around winners, and get away from negitive people. Get away from people who complain and condemn and critize all the time. These toxic people depress you and take all the joy out of living.
After you have spent time with them, you feel discouraged and demotivated. Instead, choose your friends and associates with care.
As Baron de Rothschild said,”Make no useless acquantances.”Be perfectly selfish about the people with whom you choose to work and socialize.Your “Reference group” will have more of an impact on your success and happiness than any other choices you make in life.

Your reference group is made up of people with whom you identify and associate most of the time.If you fly with eagles, you will think and feel like an eagle. If you associate with turkeys, you will think, walk, talk, and act like a turkey.

The people around you have an inordinate influence on your personality, your opinions, your goals, and everything you accomplish.Successful people are often described as loners. This does not mean that they are a-loners.

They have lots of friends, but they do not go out to lunch with whoever is standing by the door at the time. They are selective in their relationships. They insist upon only spending time with people they enjoy and whose company they can benefit from. You must do the same.

Personal Branding

With the world as a whole, and the business world in particular, changing at such a rapid pace, there’s never been a better time to ask yourself these questions:

  •
    • Do you stand out among your competitors and colleagues?
    • Should you command higher compensation or fees?
    • Can you choose which clients or assignments you want?
    • Are you achieving your goals?

Whether you are a senior executive, an entrepreneur or an employee of a company of any size, Reach will show you that the best way to succeed in the new world economy, achieve your professional goals and surpass your competition is to differentiate yourself. Let us show you how to understand, build and communicate the unique brand that is you!

__________

The Brand Called You signature story in Fast Company in 1997 argued that we should imagine ourselves as brands and manage our professional lives accordingly. That idea is every bit as relevant now as it was then. The difference, as author Tom Peters points out, is that in good times, the Brand Called You was a luxury. Now as companies continue to discard employees like used Kleenex, you have no choice but to actively market your personal brand.” /John A Byrne Editor Fast Company

__________

Personal Branding Defined
Personal branding is a revolution in the way we manage our careers or businesses. It’s a way of clarifying and communicating what makes you different and special and using those qualities to separate from yourself from your peers so that you can greatly expand your success. Personal branding is the strategy behind the world’s most successful people. People like Oprah, Madonna, Richard Branson and Bill Gates. It is the difference between an ordinary career or business and an exceptional one.

It is only a matter of time before your peers or competitors jump on the ‘brandwagon.’ So uncovering, building and nurturing your brand now will ensure that you get out in front of the pack and experience professional success beyond your dreams.

I am proud to be a woman

“Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.”
—Louisa May Alcott

“Cautious, careful people always casting about to preserve their reputation or social standards never can bring about reform. Those who are really in earnest are willing to be anything or nothing in the world’s estimation, and publicly and privately, in season and out, avow their sympathies with despised ideas and their advocates, and bear the consequences.”
—Susan B. Anthony

“The day will come when men will recognize woman as his peer, not only at the fireside, but in councils of the nation. Then, and not until then, will there be the perfect comradeship, the ideal union between the sexes that shall result in the highest development of the race.”
—Susan B. Anthony

“We ask justice, we ask equality, we ask that all the civil and political rights that belong to citizens of the United States, be guaranteed to us and our daughters forever.”
—Susan B. Anthony, Declaration of Rights for Women, July 1876

“There never will be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect lawmakers.”
—Susan B. Anthony

“In passing, also, I would like to say that the first time Adam had a chance he laid the blame on a woman.”
—Nancy Astor

(British Politician)

“For what is done or learned by one class of women becomes, by virtue of their common womanhood, the property of all women.”
—Elizabeth Blackwell

(The first woman in the U.S. to become a physician)

“We stand now where two roads diverge. But unlike the roads in Robert Frost’s familiar poem, they are not equally fair. The road we have long been traveling is deceptively easy, a smooth superhighway on which we progress with great speed, but at its end lies disaster. The other fork of the road—the one “less traveled by”—offers our last, our only chance to reach a destination that assures the preservation of the earth.”
— Rachel Carson

“The family unit plays a critical role in our society and in the training of the generation to come.”
—Sandra Day O’Connor

“We’ve chosen the path to equality, don’t let them turn us around.”
—Geraldine Ferraro
(The first woman to be nominated as Vice President of the United States)

“You can do one of two things; just shut up, which is something I don’t find easy, or learn an awful lot very fast, which is what I tried to do.”
—Jane Fonda

“If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it.”
— Margaret Fuller

“My address is like my shoes. It travels with me. I abide where there is a fight against wrong.”
—Mother Jones

“Don’t compromise yourself. You are all you’ve got.”
—Janis Joplin

“Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.”
—Helen Keller

“If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities, and so weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse gift will find a fitting place.”
—Margaret Mead

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” —Margaret Mead

Support Each Other

The only way to make sure people you agree with can speak is to support the rights of people you don’t agree with.

• There is no reason to repeat bad history.

• The question has been asked, “What is a woman?” A woman is a person who makes choices. A woman is a dreamer. A woman is a planner. A woman is a maker, and a molder. A woman is a person who makes choices. A woman builds bridges. A woman makes children and makes cars. A woman writes poetry and songs. A woman is a person who makes choices. You cannot even simply become a mother anymore. You must choose motherhood. Will you choose change? Can you become its vanguard?

• I have not been animated in my life to fight against race and sex discrimination simply because of my own identity. That would mean that one must be South African to fight apartheid, or a poor white in Appalachia to fight poverty, or Jewish to fight anti-Semitism. And I just reject that conception of how struggles should be waged.

• The essence of a free life is being able to choose the style of living you prefer free from exclusion and without the compulsion of conformity or law.

• Affirmative action is the most important modern anti-discrimination technique ever instituted in the United States. It is the one tool that has had a demonstrable effect on discrimination. No one who knows anything about the subject would say it hasn’t worked. It has certainly done something, or else it wouldn’t have provoked so much opposition.

• Affirmative action, by all statistical measures, has been the central ingredient to the creation of the Black middle class.

• Most people think civil rights today is about “whether or not I’m turning down somebody at the door because he is black or female.” It doesn’t happen that way anymore. It is more subtle. It happens when women are asked at a job interview, “Do you intend to get pregnant within the next two years?” And it happens to women much more than it happens to blacks, because blacks have spent more than 300 years trying to educate the country about how perverse it all is.

• I don’t for a moment believe that women have suffered the same kind of injustices that blacks have — women have never been enslaved. But still, many of the psychological and economic problems are the same. This country would go bankrupt in a day if the Supreme Court suddenly ordered the powers-that-be to pay back wages to children of slaves and to the women who’ve worked all their lives for half wages or no pay.

• With children no longer the universally accepted reason for marriage, marriages are going to have to exist on their own merits.

• There are not many males, black or white, who wish to get involved with a woman who’s committed to her own development.

• I am proud to be an American, proud to represent 600,000 Americans, and proud to be in the only party pledged to make the District of Columbia the 51st state.

• You can’t whip folks into line on statehood like you can on a budget vote. People have to believe in your cause.

Your life

Living your life with passion can become challenging if you are around people who do not share your beliefs. All attempts at maintaining a positive thinking and believing system may be stretched to the limits as you find yourself dealing with people who continue to see the glass as half empty. Here are 3 tips on dealing with these kinds of people.

1. Lead by example – Instead of telling your friends and family exactly what you are feeling and doing day by day, show them. You may be surprised at how observant people are, especially children. When they see you in a happy, relaxed state they will begin to pick up that things are different. Instead of reacting to a situation they will observe how you look for a positive outcome that will benefit everyone involved.

2. Set time aside for yourself daily – Insist on making time just for you each day. This should be uninterrupted time where you can think, write, breathe, stretch, and just daydream. Choose a time of day that will work with your schedule and stick to it as though it were an appointment. You may need to begin with a short period of time and extend it as the people around you adjust to it. You will find that your family members will respect this time and even remind each other that you are not to be disturbed for anything that is not an emergency during this time.

3. Invite those closest to you to become a part of your passion – living a passionate life is largely about having the time and energy to enjoy every precious event with those you love. By sharing what you are feeling and how it relates to them, your family will begin to understand what your particular passion is all about. Allow them to see how happy you are when you are involved in your passion. They may never know who you are deep inside unless you invite them in to see.

As you become more experienced in this area your friends and family will feel more comfortable sharing their passions with you. In getting to know these people on a more intimate basis you will all grow and expand. If there are issues from the past that are painful you may find ways to work through them that will solidify the foundation of your friend’s and family’s beliefs.

Living your life with passion is not a solo experience. It is one that encompasses all of the people that you come in contact with on a regular basis. Our life is what happens to us each day as we are busy making great plans for the future. The passion is in the journey. Walk the path slowly so that you will learn and grow with each step. Invite the people close to you to join you at times that are appropriate for each of you. In this way you can live the passionate life while showing others around you how to find their own passions.

Are you a Giver?

A woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry and the woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the woman.

“I’ve been thinking” he said, “I know how valuable the stone is, but I will give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone.”

Giving is one of the greatest character building exercises on the planet. When you give of yourself without expectations of return, you expand in your ability to love. A sense of abundance develops. A win-win situation is created because everybody gains. This type of thinking goes against what most people believe. Most people believe that if you give, then you have less. Instead of a sense of abundance and prosperity, they experience a sense of scarcity. People who think in these terms tend to struggle with fear, frustration, depression, illness, and anger.

Recall the last time you did something for someone else. Do you remember that feeling of happiness you experienced? When you give, you always receive as well.

If you are feeling unhappy and empty, I suggest that you seek out someone or a group in need. And then look for ways to fill their needs. By giving, you receive feelings of love and happiness, which will replace your sense of emptiness.

The quality of your life can be measured by what you give.

Use your Imagination

“To bring anything into your life, imagine that it’s already there.” – Richard Bach.

Imagination is the process of harnessing and utilizing the creative power of the mind. Imagination resides in the boundless realm of the mind where you can travel anywhere at the speed of thought. When you soar with the wondrous creative powers of your imagination, you possess a first-class ticket to the life of your dreams.

Imagine Your Ideal Life. You are not required to accept your present circumstances. As you summon up the feeling of living your ideal life right here right now, you allow the Energy of your thoughts and feelings to produce the physical manifestation that you desire. When you employ the power of imagination, you are no longer limited by external conditions. You are in charge. If you can imagine it, you can experience it.

As you access the power of your imagination, inspiration will bubble up. As you fill your subconscious with thoughts of what you would like to experience, you can bring anything you desire into your life. Imagination is the language through which you communicate with the Universe. As you develop your body through physical exercise, you can develop your imagination through mental exercise.

Imagination Exercise. Have a clear vision of your ideal life and energize it with the power of imagination. Imagine how your ideal life looks, feels, sounds, smells, and tastes. Each morning spend a few minutes imagining the way you want your day to play out. Imagine feeling great, moving through your day in a strong, vibrant body, enjoying pleasant interactions with others, doing fulfilling work with clarity and purpose. If you are visually oriented, you will see distinct pictures in your mind. It’s OK if you don’t. Imagining with feeling is all that’s required. As you imagine vividly and with feeling, you are creating the circumstances for all your desires to flow to you quickly and easily.

Let’s say you’re planning a vacation to a place you’ve always dreamed of going. It’s a great idea to spend some time imagining how wonderful this vacation will be. You see yourself strolling in a rose garden on a beautiful spring day with a gentle breeze. You feel the thrill of parasailing over a sparkling turquoise sea. You see yourself resting peacefully in a hammock on the beach in perfect weather. When you use your imagination, you can enjoy the same vacation many times – before you go – while you’re there – and when you’re back at the office.

Be There Now! The Universe does not distinguish between what is actually happening now and what you are imagining or remembering. To the Universe, it’s always the Eternal Now. So, in addition to imagining a fabulous future, you can use your imagination to relive the wonderful times of your life. Relive your triumphs and successes – when you did something you weren’t sure you could do. Who says the great moments have to be once-in-a-lifetime events? You can replay and relive them as often as you like, just as you enjoy repeatedly listening to your favorite music or watching your favorite movies or eating your favorite foods. Relive the joy of the vacation, the promotion, the baby’s first steps in your imagination and you will attract even more good times to cherish.

As you charge your imagination with emotion, your mental picture will attract its physical equivalent. Vividly think about what you want and then SEE it clearly in your imagination. The power of imagination speeds up the process from desire to manifestation. As you experience in your imagination what you wish to experience in your life, you will soon be living the life of your dreams.

Imagination

The Power of Imagination
By Remez Sasson
Imagination is the ability to form a mental image of something that is not perceived through the senses. It is the ability of the mind to build mental scenes, objects or events that do not exist, are not present or have happened in the past. Memory is actually a manifestation of imagination. Everyone possesses some imagination ability. In some it may be highly developed and in others it may manifest in a weaker form. It manifests in various degrees in various people.

Imagination makes it possible to experience a whole world inside the mind. It gives the ability to look at any situation from a different point of view, and enables one to mentally explore the past and the future.

It manifests in various forms, one of which is daydreaming. Though too much idle daydreaming may make one impractical, some daydreaming, when not being engaged in something that requires attention provides some temporary happiness, calmness and relief from stress.

In your imagination you can travel anywhere in the speed of light without any obstacles. It can make you feel free, though temporarily, and only in the mind, from tasks, difficulties and unpleasant circumstances.

Imagination is not limited only to seeing pictures in the mind. It includes all the five senses and the feelings. One can imagine a sound, taste, smell, a physical sensation or a feeling or emotion. For some people it is easier to see mental pictures, others find it easier to imagine a feeling, and some are more comfortable imagining the sensation of one of the five senses. Training of the imagination gives the ability to combine all the senses.

A developed and strong imagination does not make you a daydreamer and impractical. On the contrary, it strengthens your creative abilities, and is a great tool for recreating and remodeling your world and life.

This is a great power that can change your whole life. It is used extensively in magick, creative visualization and affirmations. It is the creator of circumstances and events. When you know how to work with it, you can make your hearts’ desires come true.

Imagination has a great role and value in each one’s life. It is much more than just idle daydreaming. We all use it, whether consciously or unconsciously, in most of our daily affairs. We use our imagination whenever we plan a party, a trip, our work or a meeting. We use it when we describe an event, explain how to arrive to a certain street, write, tell a story or cook a cake.

Imagination is a creative power that is necessary for inventing an instrument, designing a dress or a building, painting a picture or writing a book. The creative power of imagination has an important role in the achievement of success in any field. What we imagine with faith and feelings comes into being. It is the power beyond creative visualization, positive thinking and affirmations.

Visualizing an object or a situation, and repeating often this mental image, attracts the object or situation into our lives. This opens for us new, vast and fascinating opportunities.

This means that we should think only in a positive manner about our desires, otherwise we may create and attract into our lives events, situations and people that we don’t really want. This is actually what most of us do, because we don’t use the power of imagination correctly.

If you do not recognize the importance of the power of the imagination, and let it run riot, your life may not be as happy and successful as you would have wanted it to be.

Lack of understanding of the power of the imagination is responsible for the suffering, incompetence, difficulties, failures and unhappiness people experience. For some reason, most people are inclined to think in a negative way. They do not expect success. They expect the worst, and when they fail, they believe that fate is against them. This attitude can be changed, and then life will improve accordingly.

Understanding how to use your imagination correctly, and putting this knowledge into practice, for your own and others’ benefit, will put you on the golden path to success, satisfaction and happiness.

ARE YOU BEING POSITIVE?

Positive thinking brings inner peace, success, improved relationships, better health, happiness and satisfaction. It also helps the daily affairs of life move more smoothly, and makes life look bright and promising.

Positive thinking is contagious. People around you pick your mental moods and are affected accordingly. Think about happiness, good health and success, and you will cause people to like you and desire to help you, because they enjoy the vibrations that a positive mind emits.

In order to make positive thinking yield results, you need to develop a positive attitude toward life, expect a successful outcome of whatever you do, but also take any necessary actions to ensure your success.

Effective positive thinking that brings results is much more than just repeating a few positive words, or telling yourself that everything is going to be all right. It has to be your predominant mental attitude. It is not enough to think positively for a few moments, and then letting fears and lack of belief enter your mind. Some effort and inner work are necessary.
Are you willing to make a real inner change?
Are you willing to change the way you think?
Are you willing to develop a mental power that can positively affect you, your environment and the people around you?

Here are a few actions and tips to help you develop the power of positive thinking:

alt Always use only positive words while thinking and while talking. Use words such as, ‘I can’, ‘I am able’, ‘it is possible’, ‘it can be done’, etc.

alt Allow into your awareness only feelings of happiness, strength and success.

alt Try to disregard and ignore negative thoughts. Refuse to think such thoughts, and substitute them with constructive happy thoughts.

alt In your conversation use words that evoke feelings and mental images of strength, happiness and success.

alt Before starting with any plan or action, visualize clearly in your mind its successful outcome. If you visualize with concentration and faith, you will be amazed at the results.

alt Read at least one page of inspiring book every day.

alt Watch movies that make you feel happy.

alt Minimize the time you listen to the news and read the papers.

alt Associate yourself with people who think positively.

alt Always sit and walk with your back straight. This will strengthen your confidence and inner strength.

alt Walk, swim or engage in some other physical activity. This helps to develop a more positive attitude.
Think positive and expect only favorable results and situations, even if your current circumstances are not as you wish them to be. In time, your mental attitude will affect your life and circumstances and change them accordingly.

Rational Thought

Have you ever felt really stressed about something, only to see the stress vanish when you talk the situation through with a friend?

Quite often, our experience of stress comes from our perception of a situation. Often that perception is right, but sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes we are unreasonably harsh with ourselves, or jump to wrong conclusions about people’s motives, and this can send us into a downward spiral of negative thinking.

Thought Awareness, Rational Thinking and Positive Thinking are simple tools that help you to change this negative way of thinking. This page teaches you how to use them.

Introduction:

The most commonly accepted definition of stress is that it occurs when a person believes that “demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilize”. In short, it’s when we feel out of control.

When people feel stressed, they have made two main judgments: First, they feel threatened by the situation, and second, they believe that they’re not able to meet the threat. How stressed someone feels depends on how much the situation can hurt them, and how closely their resources meet the demands of the situation.

Perception is key to this as (technically!) situations are not stressful in their own right. Rather it is our interpretation of the situation that drives the level of stress that we feel.

Quite obviously, we are sometimes right in what we say to ourselves. Some situations may actually be dangerous, may threaten us physically, socially or in our career. Here, stress and emotion are part of the early warning system that alerts us to a threat.

Very often, however, we are overly harsh and unjust to ourselves in a way that we would never be with friends or co-workers. This, along with other negative thinking, can cause intense stress and unhappiness and can severely undermine our self-confidence.

Using the Tool:
Thought Awareness

You are thinking negatively when you fear the future, put yourself down, criticize yourself for errors, doubt your abilities, or expect failure. Negative thinking damages confidence, harms performance and paralyzes mental skills.

Unfortunately, negative thoughts tend to flit into our consciousness, do their damage and flit back out again, with their significance having barely been noticed. Since we barely realise that they were there, we do not challenge them properly, which means that they can be completely incorrect and wrong.

Thought Awareness is the process by which you observe your thoughts and become aware of what is going through your head.

One approach to it is to observe your “stream of consciousness” as you think about the thing you’re trying to achieve which is stressful. Do not suppress any thoughts. Instead, just let them run their course while you watch them, and write them down on our free worksheet as they occur. Then let them go.

Another more general approach to Thought Awareness comes with logging stress in your Stress Diary. When you analyze your diary at the end of the period, you should be able to see the most common and the most damaging thoughts. Tackle these as a priority using the techniques below.

Here are some typical negative thoughts you might experience when preparing to give a major presentation:

  • Fear about the quality of your performance or of problems that may interfere with it;
  • Worry about how the audience (especially important people in it like your boss) or the press may react to you;
  • Dwelling on the negative consequences of a poor performance; or
  • Self-criticism over a less-than-perfect rehearsal.

Thought awareness is the first step in the process of managing negative thoughts, as you cannot manage thoughts that you are unaware of.

Rational Thinking

The next step in dealing with negative thinking is to challenge the negative thoughts that you identified using the Thought Awareness technique. Look at every thought you wrote down and challenge it rationally. Ask yourself whether the thought is reasonable. What evidence is there for and against the thought? Would your colleagues and mentors agree or disagree with it?

Looking at the examples, the following challenges could be made to the negative thoughts we identified earlier:

  • Feelings of inadequacy: Have you trained yourself as well as you reasonably should have? Do you have the experience and resources you need to make the presentation? Have you planned, prepared and rehearsed enough? If you have done all of these, you’ve done as much as you can to give a good performance.
  • Worries about performance during rehearsal: If some of your practice was less than perfect, then remind yourself that the purpose of the practice is to identify areas for improvement, so that these can be sorted out before the performance.
  • Problems with issues outside your control: Have you identified the risks of these things happening, and have you taken steps to reduce the likelihood of them happening or their impact if they do? What will you do if they occur? And what do you need others to do for you?
  • Worry about other people’s reactions: If you have prepared well, and you do the best you can, then you should be satisfied. If you perform as well as you reasonably can, then fair people are likely to respond well. If people are not fair, the best thing to do is ignore their comments and rise above them.

Vision and Faith

When you get to the end of all the light you know, and it’s time to step into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing that one of two things shall happen: either you will be given something solid to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly.

Excellence

There isn’t a ruler, a yard stick or a measuring tape in the entire world long enough to compute the strength and capabilities inside you. - Paul J. Meyer

When we acknowledge that all of life is sacred and that each act is an act of choice and therefore sacred, then life is a sacred dance lived consciously each moment. When we live at this level, we participate in the creation of a better world.

BEING PRESENT

Today I will delete from my diary two days: yesterday and tomorrow. Yesterday was to learn and tomorrow will be the consequence of what I can do today.

Today I will face life with the conviction that this day will not ever return.

Today is the last opportunity I have to live intensely; as no one can assure methat I will see tomorrow’s sunrise.

Today I will be brave enough not to let any opportunity pass me by, my only alternative is to succeed.

Today I will invest my most valuable resource: my time, in the most transcendental work: my life;

I will spend each minute passionately to make of today a different and unique day in my life.

Today I will defy every obstacle that appears on my way trusting I will succeed.

Today I will resist pessimism and will conquer the world with a smile, with the positive attitude of expecting always the best.

Today I will make of every ordinary task a sublime expression,

Today I will have my feet on the ground understanding reality and the stars’ gaze to invent my future.

Today I will take the time to be happy and will leave my footprints and my presence in the hearts of others.

My Lifes List

This is Dedicated to a very Special Man who taught me the Value of my life- Johnny Mac

“May you live all the days of your life” - Jonathan Swift

The challenge in life is not to merely exist but to experience life to the fullest.

Choosing to embrace life and really live requires us to move from the known to the unknown. Life seems to wait on us to decide to enter in. If we choose to only do the minimal activities, then we will have minimal joy in our life. However, when we look up and step out into the unknown, we then increase our joy, our passions and our fulfillment with life

One of the things I did was make a list of all the things I wanted to do in my life. It’s changed some as I’ve gotten older, but I love marking things off as I accomplish them.

Let me share just a small portion of my list with you-

1.       Travel in every state in America (I’ve done 15 so far)

2.       Work on a ranch in Texas ( I love the little house on the Prarie effect)

3.       Write a book for Teenagers

4.       Write historical novels

5.       Work with High School kids ( 3 Years worth- Spec. Ed Teacher)

6.       Speak 3 foreign languages  I’m working on Spanish but still have 2 to go

7.       Play the guitar I’m not great, but I play. I love it!

8.       Play the piano  not yet, but I will

9.       Travel on every continent  not yet, but I’m working on it.

10.    Own my own business

11.   Bungee jump  What a rush!

My list is MUCH larger, but it gives you an idea. Make your own list. Put it up where you can see it, then start working toward marking off each accomplishment. I don’t know if you’re 21 or 91 but I learned a long time ago to live as if this was the last day of my life because you never know how much time you have.

I also decided a long time ago to make the most of every day  believing that if I was still breathing I had that day to live to the fullest and make a difference.I plan on still living that way every day of my life.

Life can be thought about. Or it can be LIVED!! I hope you’ll decide to live every day, every moment with gusto  coming to the end with absolutely no regrets! If you do that, then no matter how you define success, you will have achieved it!!

Life can be thought about. Or it can be LIVED!!

Make it a great day because

I believe in myself and I believe in you!!!
